Vacation watering

I'll be going on vacation soon and I'm starting to worry about how to water my plants in this hot & humid weather.  I'll be gone for 4 days which I think most of my flowering plants will do okay but the vegetables might not survive.  I bought this drip watering device, which is basically a plastic bottle with some mechanism at the tip that will water plants up to two weeks.  However I've put this up for a week already and I don't see the water level decreasing.  Do you have any recommendations for vacation watering? I can't really ask my neighbors to water them for me because all my plants are on the deck and they would need to come into the house to get to them.

The Drip-It Pro... doesn't really do the job:

  1. Are you sure it’s not working? It make be that water is only stimulated to come out of the bottle when the soil is dry (osmosis). If the contraption is definitely not working, what about replacing the mechanism covering the opening of the bottle with a bit of fabric, rubberbanded to opening? The fabric might allow more water to come out than the mechanism, but still release it over a longer period of time.

  2. I agree with Fern, since it is pretty humid maybe the soil hasn’t dried out too much and hasn’t needed any water.

At any rate, don’t worry about it too much. If they’re in pots you could move them to shadier areas and give them a through soaking right before you leave, 4 days isn’t horribly long….
