Root-bound Asparagus Fern

I had this Asparagus Fern in front of a windowsill for a couple of years.  I had it re-potted a few years ago and I knew it had to be repotted again.  It hasn't been doing really good and I think this plant does better in the outdoors anyway.  So I decided to dump it.  When I pull out the plant, I immediately said "Ewww...", it looked like some alien eggs! At first I thought those were some big fat worms.  Can someone tell me how the roots got to this stage? I have seen pots that are root bound, but what is this??

  1. Do asperagus ferns have tubers??? It kinda looks like crowded tuber roots! Just guessing. Funny looking, for sure all crowded in like that!

  2. I think that’s normal. If not grown in containers, asparagus ferns send tuberous looking roots out to spread over whatever dirt they can take over.

  3. Yup, that’s totally normal. Weird, but normal.

  4. Thanks for clarifying this for me as this was the first time I’ve seen roots like this.
