Video: Designing a container garden

Just in time for the gardening season.  This is a how-to video from National Gardening Association about basic container gardening.  Tips about selecting a "thriller, filler, and spiller" and also a step-by-step instruction of putting together a 16-inch container garden.  Another very useful tip is reusing soda bottles and milk jugs for the bottom of large containers so the container is not as heavy and also act as drainage.

  1. This is an excellent video and I love the site. I’ve bookmarked it for future reference. Thanks for sharing that. Also thoroughly enjoyed your pictures of Italy. Gorgeous containers!
The 3 plants in the container that you asked about are Vancouver Centennial Geranium (1), Calibrachoa “Colorburst Terracotta” (1), and the burgundy Sweet Potato Vine which I think is called “Blackie” (1). That’s it! Just 3 plants. As I said, the geranium is 3 years old so it’s quite a good size now. The year before I added Nemesia “Sunsatia Mango” by Proven Winners which was gorgeous, but unfortunately I couldn’t find it last year. You have to be careful not to overwater the geranium and calli, but the SP vine keeps the soil fairly dry because it’s a thirsty plant. I do put empty soda cans in the bottom of my larger containers. It’s a great trick. Good luck!
