Homemade Fertilizer – Part II

Other than eggshells, did you know you can also use fish heads and aspirin as fertilizer for your tomato plants? Check out this post from Grow Better Veggies.  Now I don't know where you're going to get the fish heads, but she got them from a restaurant where she grow for.  David from Segua Ania also has a post about using aspirin as fertilizer, check it out.

I mean... really... fish heads?!?!

To add on to that, you can also put shrimp, crab, or lobster shells.  Doesn't it sounds like the kitchen garbage bin?

Hyacinths Failure

Okay, so gardening is all about learning from mistakes, right? That's how we become a better gardener. Back in October, I overwintered the bulbs and I brought them in the garage during the winter.  For the whole winter I babied it and expected it to be a beautiful pot of Hyacinths.  Few weeks ago I brought them out to the deck when the frost date has passed.  I waited and waited, nothing happens. I passed by other gardens and saw how beautiful the Hyacinths are and I began to think mine is not going to open.  Today I decided to poke the bulbs and see what the deal is, the bulbs are soft and when I dug them up I saw this...

I wonder if I bought bad bulbs or the soil was too wet??  No matter what I'm not going to give up overwintering bulbs, but I might try something else like Tulips or Daffodils next time.

Plants shopping

I found these hardy succulents today, they can tolerate a zone 6 winter and doesn't require much water, all it needs is sun! I love low-maintenance drought tolerant plants, they are so easy to take care of.

First one is a Red Beauty Hens & chicks (Sempervivum 'Red Beauty').  Here are some information on the plant tag:

Medium sized and fairly open rosettes of gray-green leaves with blood red tips.  The color of red will vary from season to season.  Blooms midsummer.  Ideal for the cracks in rock gardens or along a wall.

Height: 3-4", Hardeness zone: 3 (Zone 3!!).

Second one is  Braunii Hens & Chicks (Sempervivum 'Branuii').  Here's what it says on the plant tag:

Small, dark green leaves from tight button-shaped rosetes.  Sharply pointed and occasionally flushed red depending on the season.  Stalks of yellow flowers appear in midsummer.

Height: 3-4", Hardeness zone: 3.

I wanted a climbing plant this year, after looking at a few options I narrowed down to Mandevilla.  I don't know how much success I'll have because it might need more than once a day watering in the hot summers.
