I did it... I made the plunge and ordered my first Earthbox. I've been researching about this technology and was debating whether it is worth it. After all this is a $56 self-watering container! In this economy I need to be careful how I spend my money and you know how many seeds/plants I could get with $56! OK so I decided I wanted to plant vegetables this year and save on groceries. And how wonderful it is to have my own vegetable garden so I can just go to my deck to see what's ready to harvest and that's what I'm going to cook for dinner that night. Space is limited on my deck so I can't really go crazy planting all kinds of vegetables.
I struggled to keep my vegetables watered last year. The Earthbox is supposed to cut the frequency of watering in half because of its large reservoir. It claims to double the yield of fruits and vegetables. It sounds too good to be true but I'm willing to give it a try. I wanted to order two of them but it's really hard to justify spending $100 on it, so for now I'll stick with one. It is being shipped right now and I'll report back as soon as I get it.
My sister-in-law bought this pair of gardening scissors for me in Hong Kong. She told me this brand is well-known in China and supposed to be good for gardening. I wonder if this is for bonsai pruning because I don't think it can replace my usual pruning scissors. Can't wait to try it!
I bought this self-watering container from Walmart early in the season. It claims it can draw water up to roots for up to 2 weeks. This is not true especially for sun-loving plants. I would say it would last at most 3 days under the sun in hot and humid weather. I think if you use this container in the shade, it can last for a week but I doubt it can last for two weeks. When you buy these self-watering container you need to determine what kind of plants you are going to put in. If the label says it can water for up to two weeks, it really depends on the watering frequency and the type of plant you have. I still find myself watering it every other day. Although the good thing about this is, it has room for excess water that acts as a giant saucer. So even if you water too much, the water reservoir will hold the water instead of spilling all over the place.
