It's been quiet on the gardening front but last week New York got slammed by a snow storm and it turned into a winter wonderland. We took advantage of the fresh snow and went skiing at the Catskills for the weekend. Catskills is about 2 hours north of NYC. Up in the Catskills, they had over 7 feet of snow in 4 days. I've never seen anything like it. Many people are still out of electricity and there were a lot of down trees. We have a little bamboo forest at my work campus and it was destroyed by the snowstorm, I kinda felt bad because it's been there for a long time and it really isn't something you can rebuild. I wonder if this is an indication of a really warm summer?

So how did my plants do after a week of neglect? The good news is most of the plants survived but some of them didn't do too well.

As expected, the Calibrachoa didn't do too well (Drip-It pro at the back... more on that later). It looks pathetic.

So is the Lobelia:

I just need to repeat this again... Drip-It Pro Watering System does NOT work! DO NOT BUY IT! After a week, the water level is still the same. I've given it a second chance and that's it, they are going into the trash.

The good news is my Earthboxes did a really good job of keeping my vegetables alive. Although I think the water reservoir was close to empty when I got back. Not only did my vegetable plants survived but I got some harvest too:

Plants that had the watering crystals did fantastic and they were nice and healthy. Once again my DIY watering system did a great job of keeping the Mandevilla, Fairy rose, and herbs box alive. Look at the Mandevilla... it's climbing higher than my modified trellis.

From this:

To this:

I just came back from a week long vacation to my home town in Toronto, Canada. Like many of you I worry about my garden when I go away for more than 3 days. Are my vegetables going to survive in the hot and humid days of summer? What about the Calibrachoa and Lobelia that needs constant watering, are they going to make it? Will the Earthboxes do what they were advertised? I had my fingers crossed and here's my checklist.

Drip-it Pro Watering System - I don't have much luck with these but it's better than nothing. Last time I used them the water level was the same after several days and I couldn't figure out how to make it work.

Fill up the water tank and secure the solar panel for my DIY solar drip water system - this system is setup to water my most water hungry plants - Mandevilla, Fairy rose, and herbs box.

Load up the two Earthboxes with water.

Watering crystals - first year I've used these and they seem to do a decent job. I mix them with the soil and use them mostly for the plants under shade. So far the plants only need occasional watering on hot days. I don't use them for edible plants because I'm not sure if they are scientifically proved to be safe.

And hope for the best! Stay tune for my next post to see what my garden looks like after I come back from vacation.

We stayed at the beautiful Royal Palms Resort & Spa in Phoenix during our recent trip to Arizona. When we got there, I was surprised to see how beautiful the hotel ground is. They do a fantastic job with the landscaping, as soon as I walked through the main entrance I was greeted by this amazing floral scent. It turned out we arrived at a time when the citrus trees were blooming and the smell of orange blossoms just filled the air everywhere. The hotel was built on a citrus grove back in the 1920s and now the citrus trees fills the resort with grounds. The scent of the Neroli citrus tree remained in my memory and when I got back to New York I decided looked it up.

The orange blossoms fragrant comes from neroli, the fragrant bitter orange blossom which produces one of the most cherished and expensive oils in the botanical kingdom. It grows mainly in Morocco, Tunisia, Spain and various other areas of southern Europe. Neroli oil is very precious and one of the more expensive fragrant oils.

Citrus trees

This smells wonderful too but I couldn't tell what it is. Any ideas?

Gardeners from the west coast are used to seeing the Century plant, I've heard of this interesting plant but never seen it in real life. In my recent trip to Arizona, I saw many of them in bloom and it's one of the most interesting plant I've seen. Here are some interesting facts about this plant.

Century plant only blooms once in its lifetime, which is about 30 years. When it blooms, the stalk grows 5-6 inches a day. You can literally stand in front of the plant and watch it grow! Its flower stalk can reach 40 feet up in the air. The century plant uses all its energy to produce this once-in-its-lifetime bloom, and after it finishes blooming it dies. Another interesting fact about this plant is it provides native Americans a source of food, soap, fiber, medicine and weapons.

Close-up of the flowers:

Here's a century plant in Sedona, AZ:

Just came back from a fabulous trip to Arizona visiting Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Sedona. I read many good reviews about the Desert Botanical Garden and was looking forward to it. It totally exceeded my expectation because it's not the normal botanical garden I'm used to in East Coast. It was eye opening and I learnt a lot of things about succulents.

The daytime temperature was in the nineties but I didn't think it was unbearable probably because it's desert heat, it's different from NY summers. I'll be posting pictures here on my blog and in my flickr in the next few weeks. So stay tune!

I dug up some pictures from my 2007 Italy trip. Looking at these pictures reminded me everything about the trip... food, wine, gelato (yes... it's all about food for me! Mmmm... maybe I should start a food blog.) But that's not all about Italy, it's such a lovely country and people are really friendly. I took over 500 pictures and these are just a few of them. I chose these pictures just because they are gardening related. You'll notice many of the containers used aren't fancy at all but the plants look beautiful! I hope you'll enjoy these pictures.

I found gardening can be one of the most relaxing and personally fulfilling hobbies in which a person can engage. Spending time in the fresh air while reconnecting with nature will do wonders for my mood and in these tough economic times it is also quite an inexpensive pastime. But what about those of us that don’t have the backyard space to sustain a traditional garden? A patio, balcony, or even a window box can offer all the benefits of owning a garden even within the confines of limited space. Even people with patios large enough to accommodate patio furniture, a container garden can help add some much needed color to an otherwise dull outdoor décor.

My garden is in a small space, mostly limited to smaller plants that grow vertically. This means planting flowers, vegetables, and other plants in pots or planters. The good news about vertical gardening is that that these types of plants have increased air flow and once they are off the ground they are less susceptible to bugs and other pests that could be potentially harmful to their growth. Once plants reach a height where they begin to fall to one side, I stick a small stake in the soil and gently fasten it to my plant to help encourage further upward growth. This is especially useful when growing my tomatoes.

I also ensure that the area in which to place my garden will receive adequate sunlight. It is vital to the overall health and development of my garden. I try to avoid areas that are prone to high winds, or at the very least have a wind shield to help block harsh winds that may damage the plants. Winds can be especially bothersome for balconies that are several stories high. Once there is a safe place to house the garden, then you can grow to your hearts content.

Maintaining a balcony or patio garden has been a great way to add color and life to my home. With a few simple planters, some soil, and a few packets of seeds, I have my favorite flowers, herbs, and vegetables all from the comfort of my home!

Here's a picture I took during my trip to Capri, Italy. I noticed there were quite a lot of beautiful container gardens.
